Industrial Training

July 25th, 2006 by reginabally

What is a industrial training?  It is something like internship in USA.  Students are given opportunity to receive training in the real world business environment.  After that, they could gain "real" experiences of their field.

Wonder why I used "real" to describe?  As you know, what we’re studying in colleges / universities might not enough to equip us for the skills we need to have when we start working (in the "real" environment, of course).  So, lecturers always advice students to conduct more research on their field in order to gain more knowledge.  This is true.

For my case,  I’ll have to receive my industrial training after the Chinese New Year (around February 2007).  My first choice?  Of course is Microsoft Inc.  But anyway, it’s not that easy to get into Microsoft to work…I’m not sure if I’ve the "quality" to work in Microsoft though…

In case I can’t make it into Microsoft, I’ll go back to my hometown - Sandakan to work with my father and another company (IJM Corporation, a plantation and property development company).  Working with two employees?  Hehe…you’re right.  Actually I’ll work "legally" in IJM to learn how their IT department works and at the same time,  I’ll have to be their SA and programmer.

The system they’re using now is developed by a programmer from India.  Their current system’s problem is: the programmer can’t get what the management wants.  As a result, the system is quite messy.  So, my job there is to analyze the current system and see if I could work on the proposed system.  Another problem for me: I might have to work on my own without anyone’s help.  God!!!  I really don’t think I’ll have the skills I need to accomplish the task but I’ll try.  Besides, I can’t find any reference for the plantation management system I’ll work on…

At the same time,  I’m required to develop an Inventory System for my father’s supermarket.  It sounds easy (as I developed a similar system before using VB6…quite outdated huh?) but I really have to do more research and learn more to sharpen my skills on both system analysis and programming.

Choosing the right database is also a problem.  I’m planning to look more into MySQL or Microsoft SQL Server.  However,  I don’t know what is the database system IJM is using currently so I’m not quite sure what methods should I use to migrate their system to mine.  Anyway, this are the things that I should worried about during my industrial training in Sandakan.

So, what I can do now is research, learn, research and learn.  I’ll plan what to do during my CNY period.  Hehe…

Anyone has comments on this?  Or you wish to give me suggestions?  Welcome!!!

Convocation 22-07-2006

July 25th, 2006 by reginabally

22 July 2006 is one of my most important days. It was my diploma
convocation day. My parents were there and I received flowers and teddy
bear from my mummy.

After waited for more than 1hour, I finally
received my "empty" scroll. I’m the first one in Diploma in Science to
receive the scroll. Hehe…nothing special, it’s just my name was
listed first on the name list.

My convocation was on morning
session whereas my little sister’s was on evening session. My poor
parents had to attend two sessions of the convo…Anyway, I’m sure they’re looking forward for our next convoction (advanced diploma / degree).

After that,
we accompanied our parents to shopping. They just went back on Monday morning. Anyway, we enjoyed these two days with our parents. And…I
didn’t have the time for my own revision for yesterday’s test (2 in a
day). Phew…hope I can get a pass for both tests…

I’ve uploaded my photos on flickr.  You may view them here.

New College Life

June 12th, 2006 by reginabally

Advanced diploma course has just started. Some of the lectures are
almost the same - lecturer teaches, students absorb; but some of the
lectures are different - we have to do research in order to learn.

I
like this kind of study method. I’m not the type of students that will
attend all the lectures to learn, I like to learn myself. So, I always
absent for my lectures and stay at home to study. That’s my style of
learning.

Our college’s students are just too reliable on the
lecture notes given by lecturers. Not to say I’m not among them, but I
think we should start to learn how to prepare our own lecture notes
since we’re already in the second level of the college education.

It’s
happy to know that I graduated in distinction for my Diploma in Science
major in Computer Science and Management Mathematics (it’s a double
major course). It’s sad to know that one of my best friend maybe couldn’t
make it to the advanced year.

Now, it’ might only left 9 students in
my course. Yes, 9. However, I wish 9 of us can successfully completed
our advanced diploma course as well as the degree.

There are
some "big" event for our advanced year. For example, a project on
Computer Science subjects that we have to work as a group and a
Mathematics seminar, which is an individual assignment. Although
project and seminar will be occured next year, we have to start
planning for them.

Few days ago, one of my lecturers told me
about the Microsoft Student Ambassador program. Every year, three
students will be selected to represent our college to become the MSA.
Honestly speaking, I’m very interested on this program. I wish I could
have a chance to learn more from Microsoft. Apart from that, I wish I
could learn more and explore more on the Computer Science field.

Anyway, my new college life has just started.  Hope that everything will be under control.

Let’s just pray.

After Diploma

January 6th, 2006 by reginabally

Past few months I was thinking of changing course for my advance diploma.  But I’m still not sure about whether the new course is the one I want.  The reason I want to change course is I realized that I’ve been fed up with Mathematics subjects now (especially Statistics!!!). I think I have to do more research on this though.

After advance diploma, I’ll be going back to my hometown (Sandakan, Sabah) to help my father’s business.  He has a supermarket located at an estate which is very far from my home (about >5 hours travel by car).  My husband and I will go back together since we’ll be colleague.  I am very happy about this because I can help my father on his business.  I wish to lighten his burden.  He’s been working extremely hard to give the best to our family.  So, I won’t be suffer from any home sick again and I can stay with the people I love always.

Plan for 2006

January 6th, 2006 by reginabally

Updated on 13/6/06

1) Attend all classes. (I think I would most likely ignore this) - I’m starting to absent for lectures…

2) Continue to study harder for exams. (Only applicable during exam period)

3) Play more games. (As I did for last year) - now play less due to the availability of Streamyx

4) Graduate Diploma in CGPA>3.5. (I’m doubting…) - result not out yet, but graduate in distinction

5) Get married! (Yay!) - haven’t register yet…will do it this month…

6) Buy a new phone. - budget tight…

7) Buy a PSP. - forget about that!

8) Sell more on eBay MY!!

9) Save money!!! (Unlikely…)

etc…..

I’ll update this if I think of something…

Sickness

November 22nd, 2005 by reginabally

Those of you whom know me well knew that I’ve few types of sickness.

First, weak immune system.  I always sick.  From flu to stomach pain……It seems that big body doesn’t mean that you’re healthy.

I never have full attendance in school since I started to go to school, i.e. from kindergarten.  I was also a frequent visitor to clinics.

Second, my biggest sickness will be laziness.  Yup, I admit that I’m a very lazy person.  I don’t like to be controlled.  So, I always skip classes.  Hehe… But of course, don’t learn from me.

I’m so lazy that I can sleep until noon and play games until night for a day.  I’m so lazy that I irregularly do revision on my studies.  I’m so lazy that I seldom do my tutorials (especially maths subjects).

So, the conclusion is: I’m a lazy gal.

Exam result

November 13th, 2005 by reginabally

Just got my result last week.  I’ve been worried about it for few days. But yet, it’s satisfactory.

I’m getting lazy nowadays.  Maybe because I can get good result even I skip classes.  Sometimes I wish to attend some classes, but then I’ll get bored and sneak away.

Sometimes I just don’t understand why attendance is compulsory for lectures.  Yet I know it’s for our own good.  We can learn more from lecturers.  It’s a formal way of getting educated.  But sometimes I just don’t want to spend time for meaningless lectures (sorry for some of the lecturers) because I can learn and study well even I don’t attend lectures.

Sorry for those who read my nagging.  This is one of the ways I used to express my feelings.

New Sem Starts (2nd yr 2nd Sem)

October 20th, 2005 by reginabally

Finally, it’s 2nd week of this sem.  5 subjects for this semester.  So far, I’m quite satisfied with the time-table.

Hehe, I have to participate in co-curriculum this sem ’cause this is my last chance.  Erm…swimming….eh….maybe will have another (or more) tsunamies to come. Hahaha!!

What I can tell is, I wish I could continue to skip classes which I don’t like to attend.  But I’m sure I’m not allow to do this. Coz somebody might say: Hey! You’re unfamiliar to me!! You must be always skip my class!! Hahaha!! (Sorry for the lecturer)

So, let’s pray that we all can get a better result than last sem.  And for those who need to resit, study harder!! Coz this might be your last chance to resit some papers.

Ganbade!!!

My AMD baby

October 20th, 2005 by reginabally

I purchased my AMD machine on about 2 years ago.  Recently I upgraded my pc to 512 DDR-RAM, 128MB NVidia graphic card.  So, I have to change my motherboard also.  For my AMD Athlon XP 2000+, it’s quite hard to find a suitable and no-conflict motherboard. But I purchased one (but forgot what brand it is).

As a summary, I spent around RM 700++ to upgrade my baby. (Motherboard, RAM, Graphic Card, Altec Lansing Speaker, Samsung keyboard and mouse)

What I did is like this: I installed WIndows XP Professional.  Then I install SP2 and patch it using Microsoft AutoPatcher.

After that, what I got were several blue screens when I play games………

I’m really frustrated by this and starts being fed up.

So now, I’m going to find out few solutions to solve this problem. I’ll do them in sequence. (means that if I’m still getting the annoying blue screen, I’ll change to next step)
1) Uninstall SP2
2) Re-Install Windows XP Pro
3) Try to overclock my CPU
4) Maybe it’s time for me to change my CPU (then now I have to spend more RM 1000++ to purchase P4 processor, motherboard…………)

Let’s hope I’ll solve my problem with minimum costs and minimum time.
